Tiyo Attallah Salah-El (1932–2018) was a musician, scholar, and prison abolitionist who founded the Coalition for the Abolition of Prisons in 1995. He was incarcerated for nearly 50 years and was pen pals with Howard Zinn. This year, some of his compositions have been released on Tiyo’s Songs of Life, including “Blues for Professor Zinn.” The recording features musicians Felipe Salles, Avery Sharpe, Zaccai Curtis, and Jonathan Barber, and was produced by Lois Ahrens, founding director of the Real Cost of Prisons Project.
